The Dicta

I was once asked to summarize in one A5 page the core ideas guiding my consulting and coaching. The result was the following eleven sentences. These have come, somewhat jokingly, to be called the ‘Whitechapel Dicta.’

Chapter I

  1. Healthy, fulfilling, valuable work is possible.
  2. Value is created by human attention.
  3. Increasing complexity yields diminishing returns.
  4. Technology transforms problems—rarely solves them.
  5. Organizations are often dysfunctional.
  6. Innovation, speed, and virtuosity are often overvalued; clarity, maintenance, and consistency often undervalued.
  7. The complexity of execution—and the difficulty of consistent execution—are often underappreciated.
  8. Great work is often based on care, relationships, and trust.

Chapter II

  1. Details matter; so does the big picture.
  2. Cultivating embodied human capabilities—individual, relational, and collective—is one of the highest goods.
  3. Patience and timing are two sides of the same coin.
